Salt Lick Lodge is one of the most famous safari accommodations, and the property is located within the private Taita Hills Wildlife Conservancy. The lodge is a luxury facility and one of the top-notch safari lodges in both Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Park.  

Driving to the Salt Lick from Nairobi will take approximately 6 hours whereas it takes 3 hours from Mombasa. The drive might be a long one but it is the most scenic of getting to the lodge through the highlands. The lodge is just 8 kilometres from the nearest airstrip that is located at the sanctuary and this serves both helicopters and private charters. The Madaraka Express is considered to be one of the best ways to explore Kenya as you travel to the lodge and leave the city behind. The train has one schedule per day taking one hour and thirty minutes from Mombasa and 2 hours and 10 minutes from Nairobi. There is a stopover at the Voi Terminal where a safari vehicle will be waiting to take you to the lodge in a 45 minutes’ ride.

Accommodation at Salt Lick Lodge

The Salt Lick lodge has 96 en-suite rooms that offer accommodation to guests on a safari in Kenya. The rooms are circular structures that were built on two levels on slits. They also overlook the several waterholes that are located around the Park where many of the animals gather to cool off and drink water. The rooms are also highly decorated with both African-themed and modern facilities including en-suite bathrooms, towels, toiletries, spacious double and twin beds, clean linen, ceiling fans, electric current with 220 volts, mosquito nets, and shaver outlets among others. There are 22 triple rooms, 37 double rooms and 37 twin lodge rooms.

The standard twin room: this offers occupancy to a maximum of two people and consists of two single beds. The room amenities in a standard twin room at Salt Lick include a digital safe deposit box, coffee and tea making facilities, wardrobes ceiling fans, an en-suite bathroom with a shower head and morrow, hair dryer, reading table, reading lights and a cookie jar in each room.

Double rooms at the lodge can house a maximum of two people with one double bed. The double rooms at salt lick are 34 meters in size and offer comfortable bedding to the guests.

The safari lodge offers an excellent honeymoon package to couples looking for a perfect getaway for newlywed couples and those that are looking for a romantic getaway. The honeymoon packages at the salt lick offer an unforgettable and unique experience and the packages include fresh flowers every day, a private candlelit dinner, a bottle of sparkling wine, they have a late check-out depending on its availability, massages, fruit bouquets upon arrival, afternoon champagne and a decent buffet breakfast in bed on your first night there.

Activities offered at Salt Lick Lodge       

The Mzima springs: These are located in Tsavo west National Park where many animals like crocodiles and hippos are seen. We encourage all guests at the lodge to get the time and visit the Mzima springs for this wonderful experience.

Wildlife viewing: The Tsavo West National Park has over 400 registered bird species and animals which can be seen by taking game drives around the Park. Two game drives are offered that is in the morning and afternoon and these are considered to be the best way of exploring the National Park.

Guided nature walks

Cultural visits to the Masai villages. Other popular sites around the lodge that you can check out include the Aruba dam, Lugard’s falls and the forests around the national park.

When to visit the Salt lick lodge                                                      

The lodge can be visited all year round although we advise that you book in advance especially during the peak season (June to October) because of the many tourists visiting the National Park. The wet season o the other hand is cheaper because of the reduced costs of accommodation. The lodge offers accommodation to travelers looking at adventure, leisure and business. Its strategic location within the National park has made it a go-to place for tourists visiting the Tsavo west National Park.

Facilities at the Salt Lick Lodge, Taita hills

A restaurant: The main restaurant at the lodge is the Bura restaurant which serves all types of dishes including both African-themed and international cuisines prepared by well-trained chefs. It overlooks the watering hole and serves three meals per day which include breakfast, lunch and dinner with live cooking of some dishes. The restaurant sits a maximum of 150 people and the meals are served by an ever-smiling staff and guests get to enjoy fresh vegetables that are picked from the farm.

Bar and lounge: The terraced bar and lounge are found right next to the restaurant and also overlooks the watering hole. It is a good place for relaxing as you enjoy your drinks and share stories with other tourists. The different types of drinks that are served include international beers, whiskeys, wines, soft drinks, cocktails and spirits.

Swimming pool: The lodge has a large swimming pool spacious enough for all guests to cool off and relax during the hot season. The pool has views of the watering hole and is free to all guests at the lodge.

Conference venue: The lodge has a conference venue that accommodates several meetings with equipment like projectors, boards, writing materials and chairs among others.

Health treatments: The Tulia spa that is found at the lodge is the health Centre that offers several spa treatments like massages, pedicures and manicures, facials and other rejuvenating body therapies. They also have personally tailored treatments matching the desires of the guests.

The Afya Bora spa: The spa was named using a Swahili word meaning good health and it offers magnificent spa health treatments for all the guests at the lodge. The spa treatments that are offered at the spa include Aromatherapy, Ayurveda and Swedish therapies.

A gift shop: The gift shop at the lodge sells unique handmade artefacts like cloth fabrics, necklaces, and head gears, other types of jewellery, Masai ornaments, shoes, bags and safari essentials among others.

Private viewing decks: These can be used by tourists for enjoying the wildlife around the National Park.
