Mara Explorers Camp is a luxury tented accommodation facility that is found in the Masai Mara Ecosystem a few kilometers from Sekenani gate. Masai Mara is approximately 280 km from Nairobi and the camp can be reached by either use of air which takes about 45 minutes and by road, which takes 5 to 6 hours. The Explorer Mara Camp is strategically located approximately 4km from the Sekenani Gate in the centre of the national reserve.

Each of these tents is set up on a well-raised platform and furnished with dressing mirrors, complimentary bottled water, toiletries, wooden chairs and tables, and white clean bedding. The large tents have a vintage and clear view of the surrounding areas and the wildebeest migration that happens annually on the veranda and extremely large sitting areas. The fireplace has chairs surrounding it where guests get to relax as they share their various safari experiences and it also keeps the guests warm during the bad weather season.

There is a well-stocked bar that has a variety of drinks and refreshments that include international beers, local beer, cocktails, spirits, and wines among others. Since the camp is not fenced, you get to enjoy your drinks as you enjoy the sunset, and the wildlife roaming around the national reserve.

The tented dining area is where most of the meals are served and these include both local and international cuisines and these cater to all types of tourists including those with diet issues like vegetarians among others. A well-trained staff is always available to make sure that the guests have all their meals prepared and delivered on time. If you don’t feel like sharing your meals with the rest of the guests, you can arrange to have private meals within the confines of your room including enjoying a bush breakfast.

Accommodation at the Mara Explorer Camp

The 5-star Mara Explorer Camp has 10 luxurious well-decorated and spacious tents. The location of the camp and the way the tents were spaced ensure that guests have all the much-needed privacy.                                                                                 

The camp has different types of accommodation facilities that is guest camps, budget dome tents, and en-suite cottages.

The budget dome Tent Accommodation: This is the best choice for tourists who are traveling on a budget and have either a double bed or a single fitted with facilities like bedding, solar lighting, towels, and hot showers. You will however share the clean pit latrine toilets with other guests and also use the shared self-catering kitchen that is found in the campsite. Budget Domes are 2000 KSH for self-catering and 5000 KSH full board per person per night.

Camps: Camping at the Mara explorer is fun but guests have to come with their bedding and tent. The facilities that most campers use are shared and these include the self-catering kitchen, hot showers, and pit latrine toilets among others. Remember that you it is safe if you do not walk outside your camp alone at night. Camping for self-catering per person per night is 1000 KSH and full board is 4500 KSH per person per night.

En-suite Bandas: The en-suite Bandas are best for families, couples, and friends traveling together. It is a two-family and 3 double-bedroomed with facilities like a private flush toilet, two beds, solar lighting, towels, and hot water. The rate per person per night for self-catering at the En-suite Banda is on request and the full board per person per night is 12, 000 KSH.

Note that there are no charging facilities for all types of electronics in any of the rooms at the Explorer and if you want to charge, this is done at the bar area by all guests.

The full board rate includes three meals per day with tea, coffee, and drinking water. The rates do not include park entry fees to Masai Mara National Reserve since this is paid directly at the entry gate.

Food and beverages at the Mara

Food at the Mara Explorer Camp can either be bought at the onsite restaurant or you can use the self-catering kitchen that is found at the camp. All types of food served at the restaurant are locally outsourced from the local market and for tourists who would wish to prepare their rooms, the kitchen is filled with a gas stove, sink with running water, utensils, cutlery and fresh food can be bought at the local market.

Check-in at the Mara Explorer Camp is at 9:00 am and checkout is at noon although you can still ask for a late checkout depending on the availability of the room. Note that the front desk is always open but if you are planning on arriving or leaving before your communicated dates, you will be charged an extra fee. The closest airport to Mara Explorer is Olkiombo Airstrip which is 3 minutes’ drive away.
